Edit case information screen

This topic provides an overview of the Edit case information screen and all the settings and buttons on it. However if you require step-by-step procedures on editing cases refer to To edit an existing case.

The Edit case information screen allows you to enter general information on the case such as information about the case, its status, priority, people assigned to the case, who requested the case, travel associated with the case, and statistical details which are used for management reporting. The statistical details are typically completed at the end of the case for management reporting purposes.

Click to open the ESPA analysis center screen. For a meaningful analysis it is recommended that the case includes the relevant locations, the people of interest along with their phone numbers and their CDR files. If you are analyzing tower dump or geofence data then the case requires the relevant locations and the files. When the ESPA analysis center screen opens it is automatically populated with the case details. For further information about this screen refer to ESPA analysis center screen.

This is only displayed if your case, person or phone number either contains an i-case, or has Smart track or real-time social media enabled. Click to open the Sentinel screen which allows you to monitor a person's activities on the surveilled network. For further information about this screen refer to Sentinel screen.

This setting allows you to edit the original case name if you feel it is no longer appropriate.

When you created the case you may have either entered a case name that was relevant to you at the time or you may have allowed OSS-ESPA to automatically create one for you which is titled using the format "Case <n>", where <n> is a number which increments each time a user on your OSS-ESPA account selects to automatically generate a case name.

This setting allows you to edit the original case file number if you feel it is no longer appropriate.

When you created the case you may have either entered a file number that was relevant to you at the time, such as that in your Crime database system, or if you left it blank then OSS-ESPA automatically displays it as "undefined".

This setting is mandatory. Select the status of the case.

This setting is mandatory. This setting allows you to change the original case type you selected when you created the case.

This setting is only displayed when Case type is set to Narcotic/Drug. It allows you to define the drug type.

This setting is mandatory. Select the priority of the case.

Depending on the objective of your case there are different screens you will need to complete. OSS-ESPA provides a number of pre-defined mission sets for you to select depending on your objective. These are optional but can be useful especially if you are new to OSS-ESPA. If you are using the wizard to create your case then missions sets step you through the screens required to build. Mission sets provide you with a preview of your case results. The following mission sets are available:

  • The Crime scene/Location analysis mission set can help you to locate a person so that you can either include or exclude them as potential perpetrators of the crime.

  • The Historical pattern of life analysis mission set can help you locate a person's potential location based on an analysis of their previous locations during the calendar week.

  • The Real-Time location monitoring through GPS Track mission set can help you to locate and monitor the current location of a person.

This setting is only available if your account has option E14 Sentinel. Click to open the Select a Folder dialog box. This allows you to edit which folder you want your case in.

When selected this allows:

  • the person data in the case to be used when the person appears as an associate in other cases. In these other cases, the person data can be both viewed and edited.

  • your case data to be displayed for all account users if they do an identifier search on the Advanced view cases screen screen and the identifier matches one in your case. Identifiers can be phone numbers, names, license plates, and social media accounts.

  • your case data to be searched during a Batch X-Case deconfliction, and if there is a matching identifier then that information is shared with the account user who performed the search. For further information refer to Performing a batch X-Case deconfliction search.

  • your case data to be searched during a Deconfliction search which allows the searching of identifiers between agencies who have an Info-sharing agreement in place. For further information refer to Performing a deconfliction search.

  • other account users to use your case data in an X-Case.

NOTE: All the search results are from the case files therefore no results are returned if the identifier appears in another case without a corresponding file.

When it is not selected, then only the case creator, case assignees, and administrators can view the identifier search results and add to an X-Case, however the case data cannot be used in other cases as associate data. Administrators are also informed by email if a search is performed for an identifier that exists in the case.

Whether or not this setting is set by default depends on your setting for Enable deconfliction (X-Case data search) on the User settings screen.

Select if you want the case to be used to perform ELSUR record validation. When selected, a Validation settings button is displayed on the case's Manage case screen. Click to open the Validation settings screen which allows you to configure ELSUR record validation on the case. The validation is automatically performed at the frequency set by your administrator using Frequency. For further information refer to Validating ELSUR records.

This read-only setting displays the name and email address of the person who created the case. These details come from the information in the creator's Edit user information screen.

Enter a description of the case. This description provides you with an overview of the case on the Manage case screen. In IQ packets this description is included in the Case summary section and in advanced analysis reports it is included by adding the Case information keyword in the Edit text dialog box.

This tab allows you to add some key details around the event. This information is optional but if you enter details here they are then included in the IQ packet.

Enter the start and end date/time of the crime. This information is then included in any IQ packet you create.

Select the location of the crime. The options available in this menu are all the locations that you have added to the case. If the crime location has not yet been added to the case you can enter it on the Locations of interest screen (Case management). This information is then included in any IQ packet you create.

Select which legal document was used to request the files, either a search warrant, court order, or subpoena. This information is then included in any IQ packet you create.

Enter the name of the person in your department who wrote the order. This information is then included in any IQ packet you create.

Enter the name of the person who signed the order. This information is then included in any IQ packet you create.

Select which date the order was signed. This information is then included in any IQ packet you create.

Select which date you sent the order to the operator. This information is then included in any IQ packet you create.

Enter the name of the person at the operator who provided the files. This information is then included in any IQ packet you create.

Select which date the files were received from the operator. This information is then included in any IQ packet you create.

This tab allows you to add and remove people assigned to the case. You can be assigned to a case by the case creator or another case assignee. People assigned to a case have exactly the same permissions as the case creator. You can easily find a person by searching on any part of their name or email address.

Select the type of assistance that the organization is requesting. This information is useful for management reporting.

  • Analysis: this includes any type of analysis such as a visual cellular investigation or generating analysis evidence.
  • Drive test: this requires you to provide a valid drive test for use in generating analysis evidence.
  • Tower dump: this requires you to request from the operator a list of all the calls that are transmitted through a specific cell site.
  • Plot Cellibrite data: this requires you to import and plot Cellibrite data to a report.

Select which organization is requesting assistance.

Enter the name of the person who is your point of contact in the organization that is requesting assistance. After a name is entered once then it is saved so that it is available to automatically reselect in this setting and the person's contact details, such as Email, are automatically completed.

Enter the email of the person who is your point of contact in the organization that is requesting assistance.

Enter the mobile phone number of the person who is your point of contact in the organization that is requesting assistance.

Enter the business phone number of the person who is your point of contact in the organization that is requesting assistance.

Enter the address details of the person who is your point of contact in the organization that is requesting assistance.

Enter a description of the request for assistance. You can use the controls to manage the text in your description as you can do in most text editors.

Displays which travel record is currently being displayed. The menu lists all the travel records that you have created for the case. To create a new travel record either select (new) or click Create new travel entry which automatically sets this setting to (new).

Select your name as the person who traveled.

Enter the state you traveled to.

Select the purpose of the travel.

Enter the date and time of departure. If you do not select a time a default time of 12:00 am is used. You can use the date and time pickers to enter the details, or you can enter them manually. If you enter them manually note that the date format used is month/day/year.

Select the number of days you were traveling.

Enter a description of what you did during your travel trip. You can use the controls to manage the text in your description as you can do in most text editors.

Select whether or not you notified the necessary law enforcement department that you were traveling to their state.

Enter the name of the person who was your main contact at the place you traveled to. You can either enter a new name or select from a name that has previously been entered.

Click to create an additional travel records for the case.

Click to save either the new travel record or changes you have made to an existing travel record.

Click to delete the travel record you currently have selected.

Select if you used the Cellebrite system to retrieve the contents of the mobile phone and stored them in a report.

Select if you used WIDT gear.

Select if there is a guilty plea. If there is a guilty plea there is no requirement to complete the Testimony screen.

Select if there was no valid drive available and you therefore had to complete one specifically for this case.

Enter the number of arrests made on the case.

Enter the number of victims on the case.

Enter the number of witnesses on the case.

Enter the number of cells identified.

Enter the number of designated intelligence products on the case.

Enter the number of trip wires that occurred on the case.

Enter the number of wire taps that were used on the case.

Enter the number if Investigative Intelligence Reports (IIR) that were created for this case. These reports are sent to other organizations regarding a general or global issue.

Enter the number of Situational Informational Reports (SIR) that were created for this case. These reports are specific to a defined geographical area.

Enter the number of power point maps that you prepared for this case. These are the maps that you used to present to prosecutors, defense attorneys and courts. For example, if your case involved one phone and three specific time periods you would likely have produced three power point maps. However, if your case involved one phone over a two week time period with several hundred calls over the entire country then the number of power point maps you prepared would likely be significantly greater.

Enter the number of warrants issued on the case.

Enter the total number of hours worked on the case.

Select the result of the court case.

Click to save the changes you have made.

Click to return to the Manage case screen.
